I’m curious… Have you ever had an exciting idea that regularly knocks on your mental door, but instead of giving it a chance for expression, you would bash it with an excuse?
Perhaps one of these:
“It’s not the right time.”
“I am too tired and busy right now.”
“I’m not ready yet.”
If so, you’re not alone.
“I’m too old for that.”
I sabotaged myself in the exact same ways for years, before I made the time to explore my passion for painting. The truth is: I was afraid.
I remember being scared asking these questions in my mind:
“What if I really like it?”
“How can I waste my time in such a silly way?”
“Am I getting too scattered with my passions? What about coaching and writing?
I tried to silence this little voice with distractions. You know…
- With more “serious” work,
- Watching new Netflix series,
- Buying more things,
- And with food and drinks
These quick “go-to remedies” always left me feeling empty. Something was missing in my life.
Finally, one night in November 2016, I went to a friend’s house for dinner who paints on a side and it finally clicked in me 💡.
I thought to myself: I can explore my passion and be creative. I can use painting as an expressive channel in my coaching and writing work. I can do it on a side.
The next day, I bought supplies and started to paint! I immediately felt the rush of aliveness, a warm feeling around my chest. I had so much joy, just playing with colours and shapes. Since then, I’ve been painting regularly. (Last July, I took an online course on how to paint with acrylics applying various techniques, and then painted these 3 paintings to my new office, which I love!)
If you too, are procrastinating on your passions and dreams:
Here are 3 Ways to Overcome the “Lack of Time” Excuse and Take Action:
#1. We all have the same exact 24h. Lack of time or feeling that you’re too old or too young for something is never a real excuse. It’s just a cover for your deeper fears. It’s time to shine the light on them to make them disappear.
#2. You have to look closer how you’re currently using your time and where your time is perhaps sucked by distractions like social media, TV, or useless meetings etc.
#3. You and I know well that, when something is truly important to you, you will make the time. You’ll wake up earlier or go to sleep later at night. Take a few hours on a weekend to do this thing that lights you up.
It’s time that you give yourself permission and take yourself on “a creative exploratory date”.
This is YOUR TIME.
