How often does this question come to your mind: Should I stay or leave this job?

Now, is the moment for a riposte.

About 80% of people are unhappy in their jobs.

I know, the statistics are horrifying! Especially, knowing that most likely you’ll need to work till your 70s, five days a week, for an increasing number of hours…grrrrrr

How do you know when to say? –  No more.  Basta.  I can’t stand it anymore. It’s time to move on.

There’s a pretty easy and visual solution, that you can start using as from today:

Every evening for 15 days, ask yourself the following three questions, and mark them on your graph (example on the picture) on a scale of 1 (doesn’t apply at all) to 10 (totally applies).

Have to. To what extent are my tasks being imposed on me?

Able to. To what extent do my tasks reflect my strengths and talents?

Want to. To what extent do my current tasks link to what I really want?

After those 15 days, look at the shapes of your different “sails”. If you’re moving, then your job offers you variety. If the shape of the sail is always the same, then ask yourself the following:

  1. What do you most want?
  2. Are you able to do what you want?
  3. What are you able to do?
  4. Do you want what you’re able to do?

Let me know  in the comments below how this framework works for you.

Important: If you have friends or colleagues who are having a hard time deciding what they should do with their current job, share this post with them! It could give them some actionable ideas and help them get back on track.
